Day by Day

Your all-in-one calendar app, capturing every moment worth remembering.

Time seems to be flying by faster and faster.
In the midst of our busy lives, it’s easy to lose track of what we did yesterday or even last week.
Keeping a daily journal sounds like a good idea, but finding the time for it? Not so much.

What if your daily scheduler app could do more?
What if, on top of managing your schedule, it allowed you to jot down simple notes and automatically collected and analyzed this data?
And what if all these small entries came together in to a recap that summarizes your activities over the year?

Introducing Day by Day — the calendar app that takes care of your schedule and daily journaling all in one!

Just the essentials, made simple.

Set up your own categories freely,
choose your favorite colors,
and organize your schedule with ease.

Process

1   Problem Definition

Existing calendar apps can be categorized into two distinct purposes: schedule organization and journaling.
Managing these two purposes separately can be quite tedious, often leading users to give up on journaling altogether. I found it unfortunate to let the flow of daily life simply fade into the past without being recorded.

Therefore, I aimed to design a calendar app that enables users to seamlessly achieve both purposes—schedule organization and journaling—in one convenient platform.

2   Ideation

Inspired by the year-end recap content that many people enjoy these days, I aimed to allow users to input their daily lives in their preferred data format and have the app analyze and compile this information for them.

Below are some of the references I drew inspirations from :

YouTube Music Recap

WATCHA PEDIA Year-end Recap

Naver Shopping Recap

3   Analysis of Existing Calendar Apps

To design a practical calendar app, I analyzed popular calendar apps that are widely loved by users.

First, I identified the essential features a calendar app must have, such as a basic monthly calendar view, a function for inputting schedules by date, and the ability to categorize events.

In addition, I analyzed the UX/UI elements. This included exploring user profiles, scrolling patterns, and methods for displaying events to understand which UX aspects users are already familiar with and might find awkward if altered. Based on these insights, I focused on creating a service that anyone can use effortlessly.

Below are some of the apps I analyzed :

To-do list

4   Feature Specification and UI Design

To ensure ease of use, I designed the UX/UI around three key features and created screen prototypes to deliver a polished and high-quality final product.

5   Poster Presentation

I participated in a project exhibition with this project and designed a poster to effectively explain the features of Day by Day.

Takeaways

Through this project, I was thrilled to realize that I could independently carry out a complete and polished project from start to finish. If circumstances allow, I would love to take this concept further and attempt an actual app launch.

I believe this service would be valuable for people like me, who find traditional journaling too burdensome but still want a simple way to record their daily lives. The idea of integrating AI into this service also excites me, as it could further enhance its functionality and user experience.
